CALL TO ACTION: National UBU ROI Bake-Off
PRESIDENT’S DAY: Monday, February 19, 2018
Paula Vogel sounded the call,…5 theatre artists and 1 sculptor in Frederick, Maryland answered!
We modified Vogel’s rules for a collaborative playwriting “bake-off” to fit our small merry band of writers: David Allerton, Kevin Cole, Amber George, Sarah Hempel Irani and Lydia Hadfield. Dramaturg David Allerton prepared and delivered background knowledge on Alfred Jarry’s Ubu Roi: its historical, social and cultural context. The party then watched Geoff Dunbar’s 20 minute animated short adaption of Ubu Roi to foment recognition, outrage and inspiration. Next? Riotous creative catharsis! Theatre professional Doug Grove arrived just in time to read the part of Chipmunk #2.
Recess: Time Travel
IO Duarte, (whose visual art is displayed directly to my right), videoed the reading at SHE/THEY2018. Many thanks to them!
It was a pleasure to perform a site-specific satirical monologue as part of SHE/THEY 2018! Thanks to the folks at the space Area 31, the SHE/THEY organizers, all the people who supported local art, and everyone who donated to Heartly House. Visual art will hang in the space for the rest of February. If you didn’t get a chance to swing by during Frederick’s Fire & Ice, toodle down the alley this Saturday and check it out.
